The King’s Guards
Step into the world of the King’s Guards with a visit to the Household Cavalry Museum in London. This historic regiment is renowned for its role in the Changing of the Guard ceremony at Horse Guards Parade.
With your museum ticket, you’ll gain insight into the daily lives of these iconic cavalrymen. Listen to firsthand accounts from both former and current members, admire their striking red uniforms, and witness their duties firsthand.
During your visit, you’ll explore the original 18th-century stables, where soldiers can often be seen tending to their horses. Interactive exhibits provide an engaging experience, and you won’t want to miss the hourly Changing of the Guard just outside the museum.
The History of the Royal Cavalry
Located at Horse Guards in Whitehall, this museum is housed in a building steeped in history. Established in 1750, it has long served as the headquarters of the Household Division. The Household Cavalry itself dates back to 1661, founded by King Charles II.
Today, the cavalry is composed of two elite regiments: the Life Guards and the Blues & Royals. Their responsibilities include protecting His Majesty the King during ceremonial occasions, participating in global humanitarian missions, and operating combat vehicles in peacekeeping operations.
While at the museum, be sure to admire the Horse Guards Clock, which predates Big Ben and carries a mysterious legend tied to the execution of King Charles I.
The Changing of the Guard
No visit to London is complete without witnessing the Changing of the Guard. This impressive ceremony takes place daily at 11 am, featuring members of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment as they ride from Hyde Park Barracks to Horse Guards Parade.
The procession follows a scenic route through Hyde Park Corner, Constitution Hill, and The Mall, culminating at Horse Guards Parade just outside the museum. Additionally, you can observe the daily inspection at 4 pm in the Courtyard of the Horse Guards.
